Lochaber U14’s v Oban U14’s - Sunday 20th March 2022

Oban Lorne RFC travelled to Banavie on Sunday for an U14’s development match against Lochaber U14’s who were in need of some game time to develop their rugby.

Having travelled with a large squad Oban very kindly loaned Lochaber several players to allow both teams to play the game with a full compliment of 15 players.

The match was originally scheduled to be played at Glencruitten, but was moved to Banavie to accommodate an U16’s cup game in Oban, and to assist Lochaber with travel plans for their U16’s who were away to Strathaven for a cup game.

As it was a development match both teams agreed to split the game into four quarters of twenty minutes, to allow some coaching to take place and also some mixing of players.

First Quarter – Lochaber started very well and opened the scoring with an early long range try, which was unconverted. Oban came back strongly and scored 5 tries, converting 4 of them. Score at end of first period Lochaber 5 Oban 33

Second Quarter – This was much closer with both teams displaying some excellent running rugby, and tackling well in defence. End to end rugby providing some excellent entertainment for the crowd on the hill. Score at end of 2nd period Lochaber 19 Oban 21

Third Quarter – This period continued in the same manner as the previous one, with some fantastic rugby being played by both teams, with strong tackling in defence and some really good attacking play. Score at end of 3rd period Lochaber 21 Oban 19

Fourth Quarter – The first few minutes of the final period was evenly matched with both teams scoring converted tries, however Oban then began to dominate and played some wonderful rugby as the Lochaber boys began to tire. The visitors scored a further 4 tries and ran out worthy winners. Score at end of 4th period Lochaber 7 Oban 26

A return fixture will be arranged in the coming weeks when Lochaber will travel to Oban, hopefully with a stronger squad with the addition of players who were unavailable at Banavie.
