Held at Ross Sutherland RFC, Invergordon

Eleven Lochaber U14s participated in Ross Sutherland’s Sevens tournament on Sunday 14th April, travelling by mini-bus. These games are for seven minutes each half, with each team consisting of three forwards and four backs. Because of Lochaber’s good numbers, they were able to lend Caithness two players for the day. The Lochaber team played five games, and were roughly the equal of Caithness, Moray, and Ross Sutherland, but were comprehensively outgunned by two very strong Highland teams. Individual profiles of the Lochaber boys are as follows:-
Rainers – centre and captain - ran strongly and impressed with his skills at the breakdown, began to organise his team mates more and more as the tournament went on, a good leader.
J-J – front row – got stuck in against Highland Whites, a powerful player when on the rampage as shown by his great try against Moray.
James – front row – worked hard all day, very similar in style and effectiveness to J-J.
Callum – hooker but also filled in on the wing – Mr Dependable, good hands and good in the tackle, no matter what position he’s asked to play .
Aaron – utility player – fit and keen, always in the thick of it, turning out to be a bit of a find, a good number six in the making.
Stewart – scrumhalf - not afraid to take on bigger opponents, either in the tackle or with ball in hand, his speed off the mark is a real asset.
Zack – flyhalf - tried hard to maintain some respectability in the games against Highland, will be disappointed that his memorable tackle against a huge Whites player, who had to carry him for about 30 metres, did not on that occasion prevent the try..
Josh – wing but also filled in at scrumhalf – good attacking and defensive skills, scored a number of tries and made a number of crucial tackles.
Robbie – wing but also filled in at front row – progressed as the tournament went on, and by the end was supporting his team mates well and was running good lines with the ball..
Hayden – volunteered for Caithness duty – always keen, good play in the tight where his skillsets lie, didn’t let his adoptive side down.
Archie - volunteered for Caithness duty – prefers to play in the open spaces which he does very well, didn’t let his adoptive side down.
The effort the boys made to get to the tournament, particularly those from Knoydart, and the way that Hayden and Archie were happy to play for another team, are much appreciated. It was great to see the Lochaber boys bounce back against Moray and Ross Sutherland, after the two ‘lessons in rugby’ delivered by the Highland teams. Lochaber is a relatively small club compared to most of the others, and the Lochaber boys were all, with the exception of their captain Rainers, from year S1. So all in all, everyone who participated can justifiably feel proud of their efforts.
